Recycling Water Bottles

While Flint residents appreciate donations of water, the water bottles and water filters take centuries to decompose in landfills. People are trying to work together to keep one crisis from causing another. Please see the attached flier from Keep Genesee County Beautiful that shows where you can get and recycle water and filters. Please note:

  • City of Flint residents who have signed up for recycling with Republic Waste can put their bottles to the curb. Recycling pickup is not automatic — Flint City residents must sign up to recycle by calling Republic or going to the KGCB office. Call Republic at (888) 872-7455. They will deliver a blue bin — if that’s not big enough, you can use a cardboard box, or mark your own (32 gal. or less) container as “recycling.” Republic picks up recyclables every other week on your normal trash day, but in a separate front-loader truck. The schedule is published at kgcb.net and other details also at the City of Flint website The recycling must be physically separated by a few feet from trash cans or bags, and marked as “Recycling.” Clean tin, plastic, paper and cardboard can be comingled as long as the paper doesn’t get wet.
  • Flint residents also can register for curbside recycling pickup at the Keep Genesee County Beautiful office. The process takes about 10 minutes and includes an explanation of the recycling schedule. Residents can call Keep Genesee County Beautiful at 810-767-9696 and schedule a time to come in and get a bin. The office is located in Woodside Church at 1509 E. Court Street (right next to Mott Community College) with entry at the back of the building through the door facing the playground.
  • Put your empty water bottles, bottle caps and cans in clear/see through bags and place along with your other recycling or use 32-gal. or less containers marked with the words “RECYCLING.” DO NOT PUT YOUR EMPTY WATER BOTTLES AND CANS IN A DARK AND/OR NON-SEE THROUGH GARBAGE BAG! It will be considered a part of your regular garbage pickup and they will be taken to the landfill.
