The Flint Water Advocacy Coalition is hosting a series of “Ask a Lawyer” events at the Flint Public Library. Each event in the series will focus on a different area of the law and the legal issues and questions that have arisen due to the Flint Water Crisis. A panel of lawyers that specialize in each area will be present to discuss updates and answer your questions specific to each topic. The topics are as follows:
March 16: Housing and Landlord/Tenant Issues
March 23: Custody and Family Law
March 30: Bankruptcy

Some examples of topics that may be addressed are:

  • Can I break my lease to avoid the water issues?
  • Can I withhold my rent if my landlord refuses to install filters?
  • Can a custody agreement be modified to remove a child from the affected areas?
  • Should I file for bankruptcy due to an unpaid water bill?

The Flint Water Advocacy Coalition is a comprised of representatives from the Genesee County Bar Association, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, the Centennial American Inn of Court, and Legal Services of Eastern Michigan. The Coalition was formed with the mission of helping the Flint Community with legal needs arising from the Flint Water Crisis. The hope of the Coalition is to address individual legal needs and to serve as a point of referral on other matters.
