PRESS RELEASE: Ballenger Court Apartment Complex Statement

Ballenger Court Apartment Complex Condemned by City of Flint Due to Failure to Provide Water Service for Tenants

Flint, Michigan – November 20, 2015 – The City of Flint’s Building Safety and Inspection Division has recently posted condemnation notices on a multi-unit apartment building at 810 S. Ballenger. The complex, known as Ballenger Court Apartments, is being condemned for a lack of maintenance and livability standards. As a result, the U.S. Post Office suspended mail service to the complex due to the conditions. Under city law, residential dwellings must meet certain standards to maintain livability.

The City of Flint has a responsibility to its residents to ensure that building safety and health standards are being followed. When living conditions fall below the acceptable level of health and general safety, the City must take actions to protect those affected. The condemnation process is one of the actions to be taken. The next step will be to work with our local aid agencies such as the United Way, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Shelter of Flint and Catholic Charities to connect affected residents in order to provide them with shelter and other health and safety needs.
