PRESS RELEASE: Flint Community Schools 2020 Virtual Summer Programming: An Exploration Experience

FLINT, MICHIGAN: This summer, Flint Community Schools (FCS) is offering a FREE virtual summer exploration experience for our Flint scholars. Each program will inspire confidence and creativity through hands-on activities. FCS Scholars will experience daily challenges to motivate them to go outdoors, get active and stretch their imaginations. FCS in partnership with the Flint & Genessee Chamber of Commerce-YouthQuest, Crim Fitness Foundation, FCS Title I Program, Mott Foundation, 21st Century Community Learning Centers and Flint Community Education Initiative will make it possible for the scholars of Flint Community Schools to receive a rich academic experience with lots of summer fun, and it is all FREE! As partners, we are committed to providing support for all scholars to mitigate summer learning losses in our efforts to set all children up for academic success.

All programs run Monday, June 29, 2020 through Thursday, July 23, 2020 offering weekly awards for excellent attendance and positive behavior. Registration for online summer programming is NOW OPEN. Program space is limited. Once enrollment is full, a waiting list will be created. Summer programs are for Flint Community Schools’ students only and registration is open to all FCS students. There are four summer programs available: FCS Kindergarten Boot Camp@Home for Pre-K, FCS Virtual Summer Camp@Home for Kindergarten through 5th Grade and for middle school 6th through 8th Grade, as well as FCS Virtual Online Summer Programming for Credit Recovery 9th through 12th Grade.

FCS Kindergarten Boot Camp@Home

Kindergarten ‘boot camp’ helps young Flint scholars — and their parents — with school readiness.

  • About Kindergarten Boot Camp at Home
    • Students registered for Kindergarten Boot Camp will each receive a book bag full of books, a journal, math and ELA manipulatives. Teachers will “DROP-OFF” a book bag to registered students. Students work at their own pace. Teacher check-in and support. Weekly award for excellent attendance and positive behavior.

Virtual Summer Camp @Home Kindergarten through 5th Grade

The program offers hands-on application of STEM, creative problem solving, entrepreneurship and an understanding the path to success.

Camp Theme/Topic

  • June 29 – July 2 Flight Camp: Principles of flight. Going outdoors to experiment with paper planes and hand-copters and customize their very own flight simulation robot.
  • July 6 – 9 Design Camp: Children use the materials in their kit to create sketches, build and test prototypes, design logos and confidently pitch their products.
  • July 13 – 16 Design Camp: Children use the material in their kit to create sketches, build and test prototypes, design logos and confidently pitch their products.
  • July 20 – 23 Champion Camp: Students will use design thinking to design and build the ultimate sports complex, and then head outside to play their new games.

Virtual Summer Camp @Home 6th through 8th Grade

This program strengthens math literacy while introducing middle-school-age scholars to the exciting real-world business endeavors and potential future careers.

Weekly learning sessions will include:

  • Mindfulness and Physical Fitness
  • Treasure Hunts
  • Virtual Field Trips
  • Awards for Participation and Positive Behavior
  • Small group presentations featuring business plans

Camp Modules:

It’s My Business, students will:

  • Recognize and develop entrepreneurial characteristics
  • Create business product designs
  • Prepare personal-branding future maps

It’s My Future, students will:

  • Explore potential careers
  • Develop personal-branding and job-hunting tools for earning a job.
  • Apply entrepreneurial skills to education and career pursuits

Real-World Math, students will:

  • Strengthen math literacy
  • Engage in math activities in a real-world context
  • Create mathematical games and experiences

ABOUT: Virtual Online Summer Programming: Credit Recovery 9th-12th Grade

FCS credit recovery courses are designed to help students learn at their own pace and on their own time. The flexibility and design of these courses empower students to focus on exactly the content they need to in order to catch up to their peers, recover lost credits, and graduate on time. Self-paced learning and pretesting allow students to spend more time on what they need and less time on content they’ve already mastered. Course content is aligned to state standards and the Common Core to meet the standards of Flint Community Schools. There are many different ways to help students recover credits, and with the flexibility courses offer, students can complete their work anywhere and anytime they have access to a Flint Community Schools device and Wi-Fi.

Virtual Online Summer Programming: Credit Recovery 9th-12th Grade will offer two sessions:

  • Session 1: 8:30-10:30
  • Session 2: 10:45-12:45
